Barton Fink follows a New York playwright who travels to Hollywood in 1941 after being offered a lucrative opportunity to write screenplays. Barton sees himself as an artist committed to creating meaningful work about ordinary people, but quickly discovers that the Hollywood film industry operates according to a very different set of priorities.
Assigned to write a wrestling picture, Barton struggles with writer’s block while staying in a strange, oppressive hotel. His only apparent companion is Charlie Meadows, a friendly insurance salesman staying in the neighbouring room. As Barton’s frustration grows, the hotel becomes increasingly unsettling, and the boundary between reality, imagination and nightmare begins to collapse.
